What makes antique timbers superior? The fact that they are genuinely old, as opposed to new wood attempting to look old. Antique beams and vintage used wood features deep, beautiful colors and a rich patina that is only bestowed by time.
Consider the hardships of growing in an old-growth forest. A tree that grew in an ancient forest had to compete with other trees, so it grew more slowly. That's why an antique timber beam is strong and its rings are dense.
For thousands of years the forest and alluvial basins were undisturbed, allowing these stately trees to slowly grow to jumbo heights and massive diameters.
When the last of these majestic giants were felled and taken to the saw mills, it was the end of a special era in our country's history. The conditions that allowed them to grow slowly would never be present again. Antique timber by its very nature, taking hundreds of years to mature, was not considered for replanting and is now replaced by faster growing timber.
Getting this old used lumber and used wood cleaned and ready to market is a labor-intensive job, which is why used timbers are often the price of new wood.
